If you own a Canon DSLR and have been waiting to go mirrorless, the EOS R6 is the camera for you. In fact, early Canon mirrorless releases such as the EOS R are also worth upgrading to.
One of the main reasons for this is the EOS R6’s class-leading autofocus – there’s no other camera in this class that can match its Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, which provides excellent subject detection (including animals) and tracking.
But it’s also a vast improvement on Canon’s original mirrorless models across the board, with impressive in-body image stabilization (IBIS), fast 12fps burst shooting with the mechanical shutter, and decent video skills too. 4K/60p.
The R6’s recording limits and rolling shutter issues mean it’s more of a stills camera than a video workhorse.

Significantly improved in almost every way, the third version of Sony’s A7S is the best of its kind. In fact, it’s the best hybrid video camera you can buy. Rivals may have higher specs, but the A7S III sticks with big pixels and a 4K cap for one simple reason: to be the superior 4K video camera.
The new 12.1MP back-illuminated sensor can’t shoot 6K or 8K, but it can shoot for a long time in very low light. With amazing noise management at high ISO levels, the A7S III is a liberating camera to shoot with; the only real limitations are card capacity and battery life, which averages 75 minutes when shooting in 4K.
A new touch interface and fully articulating display are equally intuitive, while an arsenal of on-body controls makes input a breeze.
IBIS and active stabilization don’t fully counter hand-shake but hold up well nonetheless, while the customizable 759-point phase-detection AF is fast and reliable, with excellent subject tracking.
And despite its focus on video, the A7S III can also produce impressive still images, framed through the 9.44 million-dot viewfinder. So what’s the catch? Coupled with decent glass and fast storage, the A7S III is a very hefty investment.

The Sony A6000 remains a popular mirrorless camera for beginners, but five years after its release, the A6100 updates its skills in a familiar yet more capable package.
Borrowing an APS-C sensor from Sony’s premium mirrorless cameras, the A6100 also implements the flagship A6600’s autofocus system to deliver exceptional continuous tracking capability that’s fast and reliable for both stills and video.
Picture quality is as expected, with good detail and decent colors (although a neutral profile would be welcome), while battery life is solid and the tilting screen is now touch-sensitive, albeit with limited functionality.
Not everything has changed: the LCD screen and electronic viewfinder are still relatively low resolution and the maximum burst is still 11fps while buffering performance can sometimes stumble.

Canon has gone all out with the EOS R5. Light but substantial in the hand, it’s the company’s best mirrorless camera to date and, on paper, might just be the best hybrid model on the market. High-resolution, full-frame and powered by the powerful Digic X processor, it’s an exceptional tool for stills photographers.
State-of-the-art Dual Pixel Autofocus is exceptional, offering impressively precise tracking and mind-blowing animal detection. Image quality is equally superlative, producing remarkable results even in low light, with minimal noise even as high as ISO 4000.
Add 20fps continuous shooting with the electronic shutter and you get a professional-grade mirrorless camera that’s just as comfortable. in the studio as it is on the street.
Battery life can’t compete with a DSLR, but a good four hours of intensive recording is possible on a single charge.
However, there are caveats. Video specs are staggering, capturing 8K at up to 30fps or 4K at up to 120fps, but heat restrictions severely limit recording times, while ‘cool down’ periods are lengthy.
And getting the most out of that performance will require an investment in expensive CFexpress cards, though if you can afford the R5’s top-end price, maybe that’s not a problem.

Despite its age, this little gem is still our favorite powerful little mirrorless camera. While we’re big fans of its big brother, the X-T4 (position number 2), this model’s combination of travel-friendly size and impressive performance makes it a fantastic choice for those who need something a little less bulky.
It’s not new anymore, given that it launched in February 2019, and there are rumors that an X-T40 could arrive later in the year or early 2021.
But the flip side of its age is that you can buy it for some great prices, and it’s still a very modern camera with few weaknesses. You get the same 26.1MP APS-C sensor and processing engine as the Fujifilm X-T3, making it suitable for everything from shooting sports to landscape photography.
This is aided by a phase-detection AF system that covers almost the entire frame, plus the usual range of Fujifilm’s excellent Film Simulation modes, which subtly mimic the company’s vintage cinematic look. It’s a fantastic and charming little SUV.

Sony’s megapixel monster gets a big boost
Sony’s A7R camera line has focused on resolution, and the A7R IV offers much more than ever. Its class-leading 61MP offers an excellent level of detail, augmented by the impressive Pixel Shift multi-shot mode.
An update to the autofocus system has made it faster and smarter, with face and eye detection AF working incredibly well, but with Sony in the lead, there was no doubt about it.
The camera body is now even tougher and better equipped to handle the worst of the elements while out in the field, while the deeper grip makes it comfortable to use for extended periods of time.
Although the addition of the top plate control dial does make it a bit more difficult to access the mode dial. And while the A7R series wasn’t designed with videographers in mind, the video quality here is excellent,

The best entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera you can buy
Very similar in many ways to the Z6 (see #1), Nikon’s new Z5 is the best entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera you can buy right now, depending on how you define ‘entry level’ .
On the spec sheet, there’s a lot that beckons. A large 24MP full-frame sensor produces beautiful images in well-lit situations, while the large, bright EVF and 3-inch tilt-angle touchscreen make composing shots a joy.
The 273-point autofocus is also very effective, coping well with both still and moving subjects. And the camera itself is a lovely thing to shoot with, offering a large, comfortable grip and a nice control layout.
Less impressive is the 4.5fps burst shooting rate, while a tight 1.7x sensor crop on 4K footage limits its use as a videography tool.
Still, it should pretty much tick all the boxes for those new to the genre or Nikon fans after a second body. The biggest problem? Cost: As prices for the older but more capable Z6 continue to drop, the Z5 seems like a less persuasive proposition.

Smaller than the Panasonic Lumix GH5, which has a comparatively small Four Thirds sensor, the Lumix S5 is a great full-frame option for those who need solid video performance with solid stills.
While it’s really a hybrid camera, the S5 is particularly strong when it comes to shooting video, thanks to its uncropped 4K/30p recording and high-end features including Dual Native ISO and V-Log recording.
If you’re looking to shoot vlog segments, there’s also a vari-angle screen and In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) to help.
Granted, the lackluster 7fps burst shooting means it’s not the best choice for action or wildlife lovers, but it does have a 6K photo mode to compensate, letting you pull 18MP stills from a video stream.
And autofocus, while not quite on the level of Sony and Canon’s latest full-framers, is certainly better than Panasonic’s previous incarnation. In fact, for video recorders who need a lot of skills as well, the Lumix S5’s only real rival at this price point is the incoming Sony A7C.

Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R , delighted in some ways and frustrated in others, but the EOS RP made a much more positive impression.
While it’s technically a younger model and not as feature-packed, its much smaller and lighter body, coupled with a much nicer price tag, means it’s much more accessible to those who were hoping to make the leap to mirrorless technology but couldn’t. they wanted to stretch, all the way to the EOS R.
With only around 4MP difference between the two, you’re not sacrificing much in terms of sensor resolution, while the responsive touchscreen, fast autofocus and deep buffer make it a joy to use in all sorts of situations.
And while the native lens range for the R mount is still limited, a lens mount adapter allows users who have already invested in the Canon ecosystem to use their existing EF lenses.

The GFX 100 beats every other model on the list in terms of native resolution, and while it carries a hefty price tag to match its beefy body, it’s arguably in a league of its own right now.
While it’s not the only camera capable of producing such detailed images, it’s the fact that it does so out of the box rather than through any gimmicks or needing to use a tripod like so many others that makes it special.
Add in a very competent autofocus system, sensor-based image stabilization, powerful 4K video, and the best EVF we’ve seen yet, and you have a supremely versatile camera.
Sure, none of us can afford one, but Fujifilm deserves high praise for offering this kind of performance at a price well below other high-resolution medium format cameras.
