For our money, these days a photography beginner is probably someone who is looking to take the next steps in their photography as they may have hit the limits of what they can do with their smartphone.

Best Cameras For Journalists in 2023

1. Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D

Best entry-level Beginner Camera

No products found.

  • A lightweight and intuitive DSLR.
  • Excellent live shot
  • Rivals bigger than mirrorless
  • Relatively few AF points

The Canon Rebel SL2 (or EOS 200D) used to top this list, however, its successor, the Rebel SL3 (also known as the EOS 250D), improved on it in every way, delivering what we believe to be the best-tier camera around. tickets you can buy now.

Housing Canon’s high-end APS-C sensor with 24.1MP resolution, the Rebel SL2 offers excellent image quality, while also incorporating a host of additional features to enhance the shooting experience.

One of the best is the level of improvement made to Live View shooting with the LCD: it’s so easy and intuitive, with such good autofocus, that we’d really say this is one of the only DSLRs to compose on. shots with the screen it is frankly preferable to use the viewfinder.

Canon also includes 4K video capability, which was missing from the previous SL2, and there are all the beeps and whistles expected from a modern camera, including Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, wrapped up in an ergonomically designed DSLR body.

There’s so much technology here to take photos and videos as good as they can be, and that’s why the Rebel SL3 is our current pick for the best entry-level camera in 2019.

2. Nikon D3500

Best entry-level DSLR Camera For Journalists

No products found.

Type: DSLR | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.2MP | Lens mount: Nikon F (DX) | Display: 3in, 921,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 5fps | Maximum video resolution: 1080p (Full HD) | User level: beginner

  • Interactive ‘Guide’ shooting mode
  • Solid performance; good handling
  • Pretty basic controls
  • LCD has no tilt and no touch screen

If you’re worried about DSLRs being complicated, don’t be. Typical of the Nikon D3000 series of cameras, the latest Nikon D3500. It has a brilliant ‘Guide’ shooting mode. This doubles as a fully interactive photography tutorial, delivered through the rear LCD screen.

It explains how, when and why to use different camera settings to the best effect, simply and efficiently. The camera controls are equally simple and easy to operate. But compared to some competing DSLRs, the Nikon D3500 is less able to grow with you as you learn new tricks and techniques.

For example, there’s no custom settings menu to tailor the camera’s functions to your preferences, as featured in all other Nikon DSLR series, from the D5000-series cameras and up. Autofocus for live view and movie capture is also very slow. Overall though, image quality and performance are very good, and the 5fps burst rate is sporty for an entry-level DSLR.

If you like the look, Nikon AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR while you’re at it, or one of the many other great Nikon lenses this DSLR system lets you use. Image 1 of 5

3. Canon EOS Rebel T100 / EOS 4000D

Best Cameras For Journalists for Budget

No products found.

Type: DSLR | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 18MP | Lens mount: Canon EF-S | Screen: 2.7in fixed, 230,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 3fps | Maximum video resolution: 1080p (Full HD) | User level: beginner

  • Super-cheap to buy
  • Easy to use
  • Poor viewfinder and screen.
  • There is no image stabilizer in the kit lens

Nobody wants to buy an expensive camera only to find out that photography is not for them. Canon limits risk with this DSLR and the very affordable EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III Kit, ideal for beginners, with the same automatic shooting mode and ‘intelligent’ function guide that you will find in more expensive Canon Cameras.

The ‘Quick’ menu is typically intuitive, and there are plenty of scene modes, as well as more advanced shooting modes. There’s also a Creative Auto mode to help you go from ‘basic zone’ to ‘creative zone modes.

The 18MP image sensor lacks megapixels compared to most current DSLRs, and there are more serious cutbacks in other areas. We wouldn’t expect a touchscreen at this price, but the rear LCD screen is disappointingly small and low in pixel count.

A bigger problem, if you don’t have perfect eyesight, is that the viewfinder lacks a diopter adjustment, as it appears on almost every other DSLR on the market. Ultimately, it’s a very basic camera but a sensible basement buy if you just want to dip your toe in the photographic water.

4. Fujifilm X-T100

Best Fujifilm Cameras For Journalists

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.2MP | Lens mount: Fujifilm X | Screen: 3-inch tilting touchscreen, 1,040k dots | Viewfinder: EVF, 2,360k dots | Maximum continuous shooting speed: 6 fps | Maximum video resolution: 4K | User level: Beginner / Intermediate

  • Elegant and light design.
  • High-resolution EVF
  • Simple and clean design.
  • 4K video limited to 15fps

It doesn’t make a lot of headlines, but the X-T100 has a lot going for it.

If you’ve been shopping for a while, you’ll find it’s not that easy to find a mirrorless camera with a viewfinder at an affordable price for beginners, and that’s why we love the X-T100.

It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to use, yet features a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and tilting touchscreen, all at a very attractive price.

There are some limitations. The X-T100 uses a regular CMOS sensor rather than Fujifilm’s more advanced X-Trans design, but more importantly, 4K video capture is limited to 15fps, so don’t get this for shooting 4K video.

Combined with the tiny little Fujinon XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ, the X-T100 is a great value camera kit that makes a particularly good travel companion whether you’re travelling the hills or flying towards the other. side of the world.

5. Nikon D5600

Best Affordable Cameras For Journalists

No products found.

Type: DSLR | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.2MP | Lens mount: Nikon F (DX) | Screen: 3.2in vari-angle touchscreen, 1,037,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 5fps | Maximum video resolution: 1080p (Full HD) | User level: beginner

  • Advanced AF system
  • Performs well at high ISOs
  • Vari-angle screen
  • SnapBridge is not great

The D5600 is a pretty expensive buy for absolute beginners, and it lacks the D3500’s Interactive Guide shooting mode, though it’s still easy to use with Full Auto, Scene and Effects modes, and plenty of manual exposure control too.

The 39-point AF system covers the frame better than the D3500, making it even better for moving subjects and more precise control in general, but for many people, the one-key advantage over the cheaper D3500 will be the 3.2-inch, angled touchscreen variant, which is also slightly larger than most others.

Live view autofocus isn’t as successful as it is on the Canon EOS 200D or any of the compact system cameras here (particularly for video), but overall performance is still excellent, and lens options are plentiful. The D5600 is a good option if Image 1 of 6

6. Olympus E-M10 Mark III

Best High-tech performance Camera

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: Micro Four Thirds | Megapixels: 16.1MP | Lens mount: Micro Four Thirds | Screen: 3.0-inch 1,040k tilt-touch | Viewfinder: electronic | Max Burst Rate: 8.6fps | Maximum video resolution: 4K | User level: beginner

  • Classic yet functional retro design.
  • Tiltable touch screen
  • High-resolution viewfinder
  • Relatively low megapixel count
  • More expensive than some DSLRs

High-tech performance wrapped in retro-chic splendour

Available in black or silver, this mirrorless camera has a classic look from yesteryear, harking back to the Olympus OM film cameras that were released in the 1970s.

The E-M10 Mark III is the least expensive and most user-friendly model starter from the current OM-D range. Still, it packs some great features into its tiny, beautifully designed body, including a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and a high-resolution tilting touchscreen.

Built-in 5-axis image stabilization works with any attached lens, and the 14-42mm EZ zoom lens is a joy to use. It’s a compact ‘pancake’ design and its auto-zoom function is ideal for movie shooting.

Speaking of which, the camera can shoot 4K UHD movies and fast burst photos at up to 8.6fps. However, while the Micro Four Thirds.

The format allows camera bodies and lenses to be unusually compact, megapixel counts are often less generous. The 16.1MP image sensor in this camera is a good example. Image 1 of 5

7. Sony A6000

Best APS-C Camera For Journalists

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.3MP | Lens mount: Sony E | Screen: 3-inch tilt screen, 921k dots | Viewfinder: EVF, 1,440k dots | Continuous shooting speed: 11fps | Maximum video resolution: Full HD | User level: beginner / enthusiast

Although now over four years old, the A 6000 is still one of Sony’s best entry-level cameras. Sony is still making them, so it’s not going away anytime soon. Plus, it significantly lowers the price of the newer A6400 and A6500 models.

In fact, it’s currently just over a third of the price of the A6500. With its compact APS-C format camera styling, and access to Sony’s range of interchangeable lenses, it’s a small body that packs a punch.

The 24.3MP image sensor’s resolution is very good, though the EVF’s 1,440k-dot resolution is a bit weak by today’s standards, and the 921k-dot tilting screen also feels pretty cramped.

It lacks the ability to shoot 4K movies, but the solid build quality, image quality, continuous shooting, and autofocus performance are better than you’ve ever expected from its price. It’s more for advanced beginners and beginner enthusiasts, but a serious bargain. Image 1 of 4

8. Panasonic Lumix GX80

Best Mirrorless Camera For Journalists

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: Micro Four Thirds | Megapixels: 16MP | Lens mount: Micro Four Thirds | Screen: 3-inch tilt, touchscreen, 1,040,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 8fps | Maximum video resolution: 4K | User level: beginner

  • 4K video recording
  • Electronic viewfinder
  • Only 16 megapixels
  • Restricted tilt screen range

The diminutive GX80 can be tailored to suit the needs of any user, from the beginner who just wants to rely on Intelligent Auto to leave it up to the camera, to the photographer who wants complete control over all exposure settings, such as shutter speed. Obturation and opening. It also has 4K video recording capability and Panasonic’s speed DFD (Depth From Defocus) autofocus system.

The built-in electronic viewfinder makes it a great choice for use in bright sunlight or darker conditions, while the tilting screen makes it easy to shoot from ground level.

Paired with Panasonic’s tiny Micro Four Thirds lenses, this makes it a great option for travel or vacation. Try to get it with the retractable 12-32mm ‘pancake’ lens – this combo isn’t much bigger than a compact point-and-shoot camera.

9. Fujifilm X-A3

Best Camera for beginners on a budget

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.2MP | Lens mount: Fujifilm X | Screen: 3-inch tilt, 1,040,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 6fps | Maximum video resolution: 1080p (Full HD) | User level: beginner

  • Great image quality
  • Handy 15-45mm kit.
  • No stabilization in the body.
  • No viewfinder

We like the Fujifilm X-A5, but we also like the X-A3, its slightly more primitive predecessor, because it’s incredible value for money.

From the outside they look pretty much the same: both are beautiful retro-style mirrorless compact cameras, both have flip-up screens for selfies and vlogging, and both have very good 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensors.

However, the X-A5 has a faster and more sophisticated phase-detection autofocus system, and it also shoots 4K video (albeit only at 15 frames per second, so it hardly counts).

However, if you don’t mind a bit of old-fashioned autofocus, the X-A3 is almost as good but for a lot less money. And if you get it with Fujifilm’s retractable 15-45mm lens, it’s a real bargain – ideal for anyone looking for their first ‘proper’ camera. Image 1 of 3

10. Canon EOS M100

Best Canon’s cheapest EOS M Camera

No products found.

Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.2MP | Lens mount: Canon EF-M | Screen: 3-inch 180-degree tilting touchscreen, 1,040,000 dots | Max Burst Rate: 6.1fps | Maximum video resolution: 1080p (Full HD) | User level: beginner

  • The cheapest Canon EOS-M
  • Easy to use
  • No viewfinder
  • Cutting characteristics

We will be honest and say that this is not our favourite mirrorless camera. The body is a bit slippery and hard to hold, there’s no viewfinder, and the controls have been made so simple there’s not even a normal mode dial.

You can do all the manual adjustments possible with other beginner cameras, but you have to spend a lot more time in the camera’s digital interface to do it.

But that’s enough of the negatives, as the EOS M100 is not only Canon’s cheapest mirrorless EOS M, it’s one of the cheapest cameras for beginners.

If you want to start taking proper high-quality pictures with the option to move on to different lenses in the future, but find other cameras a bit daunting, the EOS M100’s back-retracted approach will suit you.
